Every human activity has a degree of risk. The author considers the principles by which people are guided when accepting risk. Two levels of risk acceptance can be considered: the voluntarily accepted and the unavoidable risk levels. Of the two levels the unavoidable level is lower than the voluntary level. This means that in general people accept more voluntary risk because they think that they have a certain influence on the course of events. When accepting unavoidable risk people are more dependent on the situation. An equilibrium between voluntarily acceptable and unavoidable risk is ideal. For the choice of transport mode, taking the risk into account, the private car has the best equilibrium. As pedestrians, people have a relatively high unavoidable risk. For passengers in public transport, the subjective risk is too low.
