Policy decisions in transport planning are highly dependent on the availability of scientific knowledge. A good communication between researchers and decision makers is of major importance. It is stated that, especially in the transport field, scientific knowledge is not abundant. Continuation of research in the transport field is necessary. Policy makers can play an important role in structuring scientific research as they are well aware of gaps in knowledge that exist in the field.
