This report gives some background information on the software program "The Roundabout Explorer" (In Dutch: De Rotonde Verkenner). "The Roundabout Explorer" can be used to estimate capacities and delays at roundabouts, on which traffic leaving or entering the roundabout has to give way to traffic on the roundabout. This report consists of three parts. Part one describes the research which produced the calculation model implemented in "The Roundabout Explorer". The research contained an extensive survey of existing models and a systematic assessment of these models using measurements. "The Roundabout Explorer" has been validated for passenger cars. Part two discusses whether it is possible to use the program for estimating the influence of cyclists and heavy vehicles on the traffic operation at roundabouts. Part three briefly describes the development of the program itself and also contains a short manual.
