Samenvatting
The system of the Science Citation Index is outlined and the use of the Science Citation Index for the judgement of the importance of research is clarified. There has to be, however, a certain criticism in the judgement of the importance of individual research or collective research of one research worker, and of research by working groups, universities, etc. as an entity.
