Samenvatting

The main purpose of this study was to identify some physical aspects of streets that are behaviourally effective. It was assumed that ''environmental behaviour'' could at least partially be predicted by the simple and visual aspects of streets. The street was therefore described in terms of 61 physical stimulus- aspects, which could be empirically reduced to seven orthogonal dimensions. Factor- analysis of the judgements of 15 streets by 87 technology students showed that there are at least three dimensions in judging a street subjectively, i. e. evaluation (the measure in which a street is pleasant or attractive), activity and openness. A possible 4th and 5th dimension are order and interestingness.
