The accessibility of trains for some wheelchair users can be simplified by using the wheelchair lift. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of the wheelchair lift in practice. A pilot project and interviews with the Netherlands Railways (NS) conductors and wheelchair users were conducted. During the project, it appeared that operating the lift requires 80 seconds on average. The project showed that the effects on the timetable are minimal. The main problems in using the lift are the obstacles on the platform and the difference in height between the lift and the platform. It is essential that the train stops at the correct position with respect to the platform furniture. In general, conductors are positive about using the lift. Service provided to wheelchair users can be extended by using the lift, and it is very simple to operate. Wheelchair users are also enthusiastic about the lift and the assistance provided by the conductors. However, they find that particularly the number of stations and times when they may travel must be increased and that the advance notice period must be reduced. The conclusion is that the lift can be an attractive instrument with which NS can expand its service to wheelchair users.
