Compared with the car, the bicycle and the airplane railway transport is very old, in fact exactly 150 years. Will there be still a future for such a system? From a historical retrospective view is this question answered. Railway transport has strong trumps for long-distance traffic. On the short distance his position is weaker and reflection will be needed on spatial division, the use of the environment and a more active public transport policy.
