In The Netherlands, the next decade will probably see a change in transport forecasting. The impact of transport on society, for instance livability in the broad sense of the word, will increase in importance. Accessibility should not only focus on congestion in the main road network but should be broadened geographically. Scenarios and plans should be evaluated for safety impacts. New types of models (activity, dynamic and microsimulation) may be developed. However, it is questionable if the improvement in quality will be sufficient to legitimise the development expenses. The authors think that more importance will be attached to explaining past trends. Research products will become more accessible to policymakers, and researchers will have to improve the scientific basis on which their findings are built. (A)
