Samenvatting

This report deals with roundabouts, especially those with two circulating lanes, the off-side priority rule and no traffic signals. In the Netherlands this roundabout type will hardly be found because there are only thirteen of these. Twelve roundabouts are old ones at which the "right of way' rule is replaced by the off-side priority rule a few years ago. In contrary to the few roundabouts of the above-mentioned type, the mini roundabout (with one circulating lane) is very popular. To-day there are more than 300 and the experiences regarding to traffic safety and capacity are very positive. In neighbouring countries the experiences with bigger roundabouts are positive as well. Therefore the interest in roundabouts with two circulating lanes is still growing but experiences concerning capacity, design and application are very small. This report describes an investigation to these aspects. This investigation consists of a literature study of foreign experiences and an contribution of two Dutch roundabouts in Lelystad and Maastricht. (A)
