Samenvatting

Traffic chaos in and around the big cities. Causes-Problems-Reorganiation. Today's traffic chaos takes place inside our big cities and along the periphery. The main reasons are: 1 the rapid growth of population. 2. the physic 1 change of the cities. 3. the increase in the number of motorvehicles. The growth of the populations is concentrated within limited areas. This is shown by examples. It is anticipated that 80% of the working people in the industrialized countries of the western world will be employed by the service industries (Forecast J. Fourastié). The physical change of the cities is such that the service industries will eventually push out the manufacturing and trade industries from the city proper. As a result there will be an additional accumulation of traffic which can only be effectively taken care of by a good system of public transportation. The author offers some possible solutions through detailed examples and proposals which are meant to provide sensible directions for the future development of city and traffic planning.
