Samenvatting

There were hardly any known data to prove that cyclists and moped riders have a disproportionate risk of being involved in accidents on rural highways in proportion to their traffic performance. Therefore a literature review was made to obtain all data which play a role in the traffic safety of cyclists and moped riders on rural highways. Data were collected on accident rate, traffic intensity, and traffic performance of cyclists and moped riders on rural highways. It is shown that the intensity of motorised traffic and of the moped/bicycle traffic has the highest influence on the safety of cyclist and moped riders. There is a difference between rural highways that have separate cycle tracks and those that do not. Characteristics of road sections without cycle tracks which have an unfavourable effect on traffic safety for cyclist and moped riders are: the number of junctions; the presence of parking places; stops for public transport; the width of the road; the percentage of freight transport; and age.
