Samenvatting

Research work carried out at Loughborough University is described which concerns the problem of accidents said to be caused by drowsy drivers suffering from a lack of sleep. Drivers likely to be considered at risk include commercial drivers, salesmen, doctors, pilots and crew, as well as night-shift workers, all working unsocial hours. Simulation tests were carried out on drivers with restricted sleep patterns and their alertness recorded on the Karolinska scale. Although alertness can be temporarily restored with energy drinks, a safer solution is a regular sleep pattern. Examples are mentioned where haulage operators have reduced accident rates by introducing training programmes on maintaining proper sleep levels.
