With the steady increase in international trade being expected to continue, the possibilty of reducing energy use by logistics is considered. This paper discusses the organisation of the logistical chain between companies i.e. the procurement of raw materials, supply and distribution of semi-finished products and distribution of final products. The effects on transport are estimated and translated into effects on energy use. Trends and opportunities for reduction in manufacturing and in transport obtained from literature surveys are examined. It is concluded that in order to reduce freight transport an approach requiring creative solutions and cooperation between enterprises will be preferable to control by prohibitions and taxation.
