Locations in the transport chain where it is particularly necessary to convey information to travellers are identified and the problems of communicating this information to the disabled discussed. Some techniques which have been used in France are described including guidance strips, warning strips, audible announcements, visual displays and audible crossing signals. The need for signs and signals which can be understood by people unable to read is noted. The work of COLITRAH, the Liaison Committee for the Transport of People with Disabilities is outlined. COLITRAH aims to improve all links in the transport chain for the disabled but with only 10% of disabled people belonging to specialist organisations has a problem in communicating information. A number of initiatives are described which aim to overcome this problem. The author suggests that information for the disabled will be a benefit for all and notes that with the Single European Act information will need to be standardised throughout Europe.
