Samenvatting

This paper presents the proposed implementation plan for Intelligent Transport Systems and services (ITS) in Wales over the next 5 years, to ensure that Wales is on the correct path for future developments allowing for future growth and capacity requirements. ITS are already used extensively in Wales. The existing organization and systems are presented together with the plans for the evolution of the separate traffic control centers for North and South Wales and the development of a single travel information center for all Wales. Developments in data management and decision support tools for traffic management are described, along with the pro-active methods and procedures used in the control offices, the methods used for managing and disseminating information to traffic, and the means for cross border communication with regional control centers in neighboring countries. Developments in multi-modal, multi-lingual Public Transport information systems and plans for enhancements are presented, as part of the UK wide Transport Direct initiative. Plans for developing combined traffic and public transport information systems are described. Opportunities for developing integrated transport, including urban/inter-urban interaction, smartcards and freight vehicle management are outlined.
