A before and after study was made of the changes in bus patronage following alterations to scheduled services in Gosport and Fareham in 1978. The passenger response to the alterations in services was found to be greater for travel at weekends (bus-kilometres elasticity 0.81) than for travel during weekdays (bus-kilometres elasticity 0.55). a bus-kilometres elasticity value of 0.6 was obtained for all-week travel. The passenger response to changes during the evening off-peak (bus-kilometres elasticity 0.73) was found to be greater than the response to changes during the evening peak (bus-kilometres elasticity 0.32). passengers were found to respond less to changes in real fares over the period 1976 to 1979 than changes in scheduled services: the fares elasticity for weekday travel was about -0.2. although these results only describe the passenger response to changes in Gosport and Fareham at the time of the study, they are in line with results obtained elsewhere.
