THE ARTICLE EVALUATES THE SCOPE FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION IN THE TRANSPORT SECTOR IN THE USA. THE INTENTION OF THE ANALYSIS IS TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF ENERGY PRICES ON QUANTITY OF ENERGY DEMANDED. CONSIDERING MOTOR FUEL, BOTH VEHICLE MILES TRAVELLED AND STOCK OF AUTOMOBILES RESPOND TO CHANGING PRICES. THE CONSUMPTION OF DIESEL FUEL, AVIATION FUEL AND ELECTRICAL ENERGY IS FOUND TO RESPOND TO ENERGY PRICES AS WELL AS LEVEL OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY. THE MAGNITUDE OF PRICE RESPONSIVENESS IS TYPICALLY SMALL AS ENERGY COSTS ARE ONLY A MINOR PART OF TRUCK, BUS, AIR AND RAIL TRANSPORT COSTS.
