Papers read at the 1972 third annual conference on demand responsive transportation systems, grouped into those that deal with implementation of specific systems and those that deal with general issues are presented. Background information is provided in an introductory chapter on guidelines for design and implementation. The system is suggested as an answer to the needs in low density areas. Individual examples discussed are, the bay ridges, ontario system which was developed primarily as an extension of the go transit commuter railroad and the regina, saskatchewan system which serves both as feeder for a fixed-route bus line and a general service. The bataria, new york project which replaced a fixed-route bus system and the columbus, ohio project are examples of operations in model cities. The federally funded hadonfield, new jersey service is discussed in terms of operation and user survey. Three papers describe the legal aspects, operation and public response of the ann arbor project. Six british dial-a-bus studies are discussed. In the general category, the relation of the transit workers' union to the system and the role of industry and user preference surveys are covered as is also the use of computers and data processing in dispatching systems.
