Samenvatting

DSRC based EFC (electronic fee collection) systems have taken the first steps into a new area recently; from interurban highways to dense urban environments. This has lead to new requirements and new opportunities. This paper describes these and elaborates on how they can be managed. The new environment benefits from both DSRC and advanced video technique capability to fulfil system requirements, but functionality is not all in this new setting. The urban environment also introduces pre-requisites on aesthetics, installation methodology, security concept and other aspects long known to those working inside dense urban areas. This paper shows where system design has led us to at this time and highlights the critical items. It alsodescribes a proposed system, the Kapsch City System, which has been designed to meet the extended range of requirements and which has been thoroughly tested in real urban street traffic conditions.
