Brisbane City Council is Australia's largest local government authority. As well as delivering traditional local government services such as water supply, sewerage and parks, it is also mainly responsible for town planning, development control, transport and traffic. This land use/transport nexus provides for a very effective and efficient way of delivering an optimum transport network that truly reflects the city's desired direction. This paper discusses the city's objectives under the strategic transport plan and how intelligent transport systems are employed to help deliver these objectives. The focus is very much on sustainable growth and livability with its social, environmental and economic dimensions. The paper briefly describes Brisbane's BLISS traffic system network and traffic control system. The RAPID bus arrival information system, which was also developed by Brisbane City Council, is also described. Finally two significant ITS projects, the Coronation Drive tidal flow bus lane and the Inner City Bypass (ICB) are described.
