Alongside macroscopic models that describe behaviour under differing speed and flow conditions, there is a need for in-depth analysis of drivers' behaviour in car-following. Research was carried out to find out how the driver manages this type of road situation and how he regulates his speed and his distances with other vehicles as a function of the strategies that need to be highlighted. This research was carried out by observing behaviour in a real driving situation over an 11-km stretch of motorway in an equipped vehicle (for measuring speed and making a video recording of the journey). Observation is complemented by in-depth interviews conducted with the drivers, using the video recording of the journey as a basis for asking them in particular to justify all their actions, such as changes of lanes and variations in speed. Two groups of drivers participated in the study - four experienced drivers and three novices.
