Samenvatting

The paper and a shortened version were presented to the OECD symposium on methods for determining geometric road design standards 1976, Helsingoer, denmark, 10-12 may 1976. The paper advocated the recategorisation of existing networks of roads on the basis of a functional physical planning (efficient use of space). Without losing sight of the other quality aspect, the emphasis is put on road safety criteria, since these largely determine the monofunctional character of traffic space. The realisation of road categorisation often demands costly long-term reconstructions of present traffic facilities. For traffic situations not yet adapted to the requirements for the category, specific warning systems will have to be used.
