This chapter is an exhaustive review of the research on symbols for labeling automobile controls and displays. It covers: 1) the development of symbols in the international standard; 2) how symbols should be developed and tested; 3) size and other dispay requirements; and 4) the perceptual characteristics of easily identified symbols.
