Samenvatting

A good design of bicycle facilities is based on the characteristics and abilities of the bicycle and its rider, and upon quality requirements. The five requirements are: (1) safety; (2) comfort; (3) directness; (4) attractiveness; and (5) coherency. From these requirements, concrete specifications can be derived for all elements of the bicycle infrastructure. This paper works out the implications of these requirements on the bicycle infrastructure maintenance. The paper presents concrete points of attention: (I) foundation; (II) type of pavement; and (III) within monitoring the state of maintenance, for example: (a) disturbance of flatness; (b) damaged edges; (c) insufficient draining; (d) damaged shoulders; and (e) slipperiness/iciness.
