Samenvatting

This paper discusses the development of a system that integrates automatic passenger counting (APC) systems with automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems. The Transit Integrated Monitoring System (TIMS) is capable of integrating radio frequency based smart cards and global position systems to track both passengers and vehicles. An overview of the software and hardware (RF/ID and GPS) requirements for a TIMS is described. The results of system testing yielded a 96.5% read reliability rate for the cards. In addition, if the cards are used as proximity devices a 100% rate can be achieved. The results associated with this research should assist practitioners in understanding, developing, and deploying Transit Integrated Monitoring Systems. Future work involves using the information within the TIMS to improve transit system performance and adding dynamic behavior to geographic information systems.
