Samenvatting

Research and development of AHS (Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway System) is being conducted with ITS as its core theme in order to 1) improve safety, and to 2) improve efficiency and the environment and enhance comfort. AHS research and development is being conducted based on two development scenarios: information provision/warning/control assistance (AHS-i/c) and automated driving (AHS-a). It has been difficult to systematize research and development on AHS because of the wide scope of its applicability and the difficulties that must be overcome. But because the successful results of research and development achieved by investing vast resources and energy will be of genuine benefit to society, it is vital that this research and development be guided by the needs of society and of AHS users to permit its systematization and quantitative evaluation. The AHSRA has begun work torepare requirements for the improvement of safety that is an urgent issue and one with quantitative goals that are relatively clear, and at the same time as the AHSRA is clearly enacting requirements, it is designing systems in line with the requirements.
