This paper presents the design of an Intermodal Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for Boston's Logan International Airport, owned and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). The system design calls for Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technologies to enhance passengers' intermodal transfer and Logan's commercial vehicle operations and business processes. Features offered by the system include an improved flight arrival based dispatch, automated terminal curb management, contracted services monitoring, and trip fee assignment. Once implemented, the system will be capable of assisting Massport improve the level of service provided, maximize the percentage of capture of current revenue sources, provide new potential sources of revenue, reduce management, operation and administrative cost, enhance vehicle tracking and data collection, support marketing of data on vehicle movements to fleet operators, improve the operation of access and terminal roadways, and improve the response to neighborhood traffic and other special needs.
