Samenvatting

The objectives of this paper are: a) to familarize with the different design methodologies which can be used to develop safer design of vehicles, roads and surrounding environments; b) to show, through number of proven examples, an attempt is made that better designs can reduce both probability of an accident occuring at the first place and the severity of the injury if one does occur; and c) to explain why some of the `so-called' design solutions which are often proposed to enhance the safety, do not work and reasons for their failure.
