Samenvatting

The do's and don'ts to safe roadside management are available in this brochure condensing the output of the RISER project. The main purpose of the RISER research project was to help prevent and mitigate the consequences of single-vehicle off-road collisions which are currently responsible for 40% of all fatalities. RISER has sought to promote a common definition of hazards and a standard methodology to eradicate roadside obstacles based on a thorough understanding of the paramters of single vehicle accidents. The “RISER method” is based on a decision tree which helps road engineers find the most adequate solution to a given accident spot. These recommendations have now been condensed into a reader-friendly brochure giving access to all RISER deliverables: - accident databases for collisions with roadside infrastructure - summary of driver behaviour and driver interactions with roadside infrastructure - critical vehicle and infrastructure interactions - safety performance information for road infrastructure - summary of European design guidelines for roadside infrastructure - guidelines for roadside infrastructure on new and existing roads - summary of maintenance and operational procedures for roadside infrastructure - guidelines for maintenance and operations of roadside infrastructure.
