Samenvatting

The aim of the research presented in this paper is to identify critical issues in the development of automotive human machine interfaces (HMIs) for older drivers by assessing their specific abilities and restrictions. It is shown that the ratio of older drivers will increase significantly and, hence, designing for older drivers will become a critical task. The development of a new tool for the assessment of older people's driving abilities is described. From the results of a literature study and questionnaire based surveys, driving tasks critical for older drivers are identified, and corresponding guidelines for the design of HMIs for older drivers deducted.
