Samenvatting

In the European Transport Telematics project, SAVE (System for effective Assessment of driver state and VEhicle), a system for the effective assessment of the driver state control and vehicle control in emergency situations is being developed. The authors outline situations where there is a risk that innovative systems can be counterproductive when the driver is impaired. It is suggested that the design of the human/machine interface (HMI) must be developed in parallel with the new technologies for driver monitoring, automatic emergency handling and communication. The approach taken to HMI design in the SAVE project is described. As well as integrated simultaneous engineering and rapid prototyping, this includes the development of HMI scenarios at an early stage and computer simulations of the HMI.
