To reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents, it is necessary to investigate the human factor, deriving from the interaction of humans and machines in an automotive environment. This report considers the impact of safety devices dedicated to supporting the driver and, in particular, the design of new on-vehicle safety devices. Applying the principles of human-machine interaction to design processes involves an examination of human perceptual and reasoning activities, generally called Cognitive Ergonomics (CE) . The report depicts the impact of CE on the overall process of design of safety devices and measures, describes the most relevant issues, and defines the existing techniques and methods that can be applied by practitioners.
