Samenvatting

Maintenance of the vigilance of drivers is important for road safety. This paper considers the means that have been developed for detecting a decrease in this vigilance. The two important categories of indicators of the state of the driver are: (1) the psycho-physiological characteristics of the driver; and (2) the type of driving determined with reference to the characteristic parameters of the vehicle. The paper also reviews the different items of equipment that can be fitted to the drivers or their vehicles. The paper refers to the results of experimental work on the driver's posture, in particular the position of his head. Finally, the paper refers to the importance of providing both an appropriate alarm and the need for psycho-ergonomic work aimed at facilitating the acceptance and use of these driver aids. (A)
