The paper describes how, In an on-board ITS information system friendly to drivers, it is important to detect the states of the driver's consciousness or attention, and change the method or timing for providing information according to the states. The driver's states to be detected include two states. One is the consciousness state such as dozing, and the other is the attention state such as in attention or excessive concentration. The paper developed the detection system of driver's gaze direction for detecting the excessive concentration through cellular phone use or inattention using moving picture processing. In this system, facial images are obtained by projecting an infrared light robust for the change in the surrounding illumination conditions. The eye areas are extracted automatically from the facial images and tracked on real time and the results of these expressions are presented.
