Samenvatting

In this study eight residential areas of various size and structure were considered; This sample is roughly representative of most physical aspects of residences that could be found in French cities. Main conclusions are that the most dangerous areas are of average size (around 15.000 inhabitants) and have grown without any overall planning; the main safety problem concerns two-wheeler- accidents; speed is an important accident factor; and there is a need for protection of children on their way from and to school.
