Bus operation in Bangkok has not been very effective in relieving congestion on roads due to its poor service and low reliability. To improve existing bus operation conditions, Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) is currently installing an automatic vehicle location (AVL) system on one of its bus routes as a pilot project. After deploying AVL a reduction in waiting time, improvements of on-time performance and improved security in travel are expected; these will in turn help to increase ridership. The objectives of this study were to determine passengers satisfaction about existing bus operation and their expectations of an AVL system in bus transit The results of attitudinal survey showed that passengers were satisfied with safety in travel, behaviour and service of bus crew, and consistency in service day-to-day of existing bus operation while they demanded punctuality of arrival and departure on-time, and safety in travel as the most feature of an AVL system. Higher excess waiting times were noticed in off-peak and evening peak periods of weekday. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. 0612AR242E.
