Samenvatting

Research is being conducted into the potential of LRT (light rail transit) for travel within Belfast and in particular the relevance for increased mobility of elderly people. Two hundred people completed a week's travel diary in april 1991, one hundred retired and one hundred non-retired people. The results indicate that elderly people in the study area are making little use of public transport, less than one journey per person each week. The study also showed that elderly peoples' actual travel is 50% that of other age groups. The report concludes that a high technology system will have minimal impact on elderly peoples' mobility in Belfast. Emphasis is placed in the paper on the research method as methods often validate the results.
