Samenvatting

Most deterrence research in the field of alcohol and traffic safety has been limited to the simple question: is impaired driving reduced under conditions of greater severely and /certainty of punishment. However, useful the question is, it is based on a model of social control which is exceptionally simplistic. This paper re-examines the deterrence theory in the light of the more recent social science literature and introduces a social control framework better able to represent current research findings.
