The deterrent effects of stiffer DUI law : an empirical study.

Responding to increased public and private concern about drinking and driving activities. California enacted legislation in 1982 that increased the penalties associated with DUI of alcohol. The present study is on the law's effect on drunk driving. The results are consisted with the deterrent hypothesis suggesting that, all else held constant, an individual will drink and drive less when faced with increased penalties.
