Samenvatting

The theory of deterrence through criminal law enforcement has determined the major system of public responsibility for road safety in most parts of the world. In order to study the deterrence process, it is necessary to develop a model of how the deterrence of the drinking driver is supposed to take place, and to make explicit the causal sequences linking law enforcement with drinking and driving behaviour. Such a model is proposed in this paper.
