The authors discuss the (External Peripheral Instrument for Deformation Measurement) EPIDM system designed and patented by NHTSA -- a new tool for measuring chest deflection. The authors focus on the operational theory underlying the EPIDM, its physical characteristics, some experimental results, and various processes that are being used to develop advanced thoracic injury criteria.
