Samenvatting

A novel suspension system, PAWS, was proposed following an extensive computer modelling programme. Practical testing of a prototype suspension both in the laboratory and on a test track has proved that the suspension offers significant benefits over passive systems. The benefits can be achieved without the extensive instrumentation and at a cost much less than would be required for an active system providing a similar level of performance. With respect to the project initially undertaken, the objectives were to achieve a high level of understanding of the performance of vehicle suspensions. A suspension was ultimately engineered, demonstrating that the desired level of understanding was achieved. The objective of the work presented here, to derive an advanced suspension system for trucks with the potential to reduce wheel forces and hence road damage, was achieved and the paper discusses how the system was realised in a practical application.
