The Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) concept started simply as an electronic tag. Today, with two-way communication capability, programmability, and intelligence, it has become an accepted Vehicle-to-Roadside Communication (VRC) system, with applications ranging from fleet management to driver information systems. This paper, one of a series of application papers, covers the use of the VRC technology, coupled with an on-board card interface and character display to provide driver identification and information, for the ground transportation management system at Toronto's airport.
