Samenvatting

Automated Vehicle Guidance (AVG) systems are defined as systems in which the driving tasks of a driver are taken over partly or entirely by an automated system. This report aims to identify available information with respect to the development of AVG systems. The approach uses a framework for studying the development of AVG systems in relation with developments of the overall transportation system. The framework addressed the following main components: (1) AVG `seeds'; (2) AVG system evolution; (3) the transportation system; and (4) the environment of the transportation system. In general, it appeared that studies that have directly dealt with possible developments of AVG are scarce. Therefore, this survey has adapted a wider scope to also identify studies and results that would be indirectly useful. For each of the main components useful studies and results have been identified. The study suggests next steps to explore and to evaluate the possible development of AVG systems in a specific region, for two different future scenarios. One scenario assumes strong government regulation, the other scenario assumes self-regulation.
