Samenvatting

In Japan, the market of cellular phones is rapidly growing. Cellular phones now feature many functions, not only e-mail but internet web access as well. The Personal Handyphone System (PHS), one of the existing standards in Japan which is particularly widespread in urban areas, also boasts a positioning function. Therefore, PHS can be an effective tool for collecting travel behaviour data. The purpose of this paper is to develop the system for data collection for the Japanese Person Trip Survey, which is the statistical survey of travel behaviour in urban areas. The system developed consists of PHS devices along with a Computer Telephony Integrated Server (CTI). The characteristics of this System are: 1) collection of time and location data by way of the location function, 2) data on trip purpose and chosen transportation mode (i.e. highway, public transit, railroads) via a web-based questionnaire operated by the CTI server, and 3) test-subjects replying to the web-questionnaire with assistance from the CTI server. Using this new system within the existing PT survey will allow shorter time for the disclosure of the results.
