Samenvatting

A car collision is caused when the stopping distance (stopping time) is longer than the headway distance (headway time). In order to reduce the number of accidents, it is important to increase the amount of headway time. In our previous studies, the authors developed a driving simulator using a workstation for experiencing the efficiency of driving. It was found that the subjects increased their headway times after experiencing that speedy driving did not always shorten travelling time meaningfully. It is, however, difficult to educate many drivers because the workstation used for this driving simulator was very expensive. Therefore, a driving simulator using personal computers was developed. The driving simulator was modelled after a part of a road in Fukuoka, Japan. The positions, offset-times, and cycles of the traffic signals on the road were simulated. travelling times and headway times in the driving simulator correlated with those on the real road.
