Samenvatting

Japanese electronic toll collection (ETC) system was launched in Metropolitan Tokyo area since end of April 2000 and preparations are now moving ahead toward nationwide deployment of ETC by 2003. Two types of in-vehicle ETC terminals to enable customers to use ETC service have been developed and installation of the terminals begun in some vehicle models. One terminal is an on-dash type that operates independently and is mounted atop the dashboard; the other terminal is a built-in type that operates in tandem with a navigation system and uses an in-vehicle information display and a speaker. This paper describes an approach to resolving issues concerning the method of presenting information to drivers when an ETC system is used.
