This paper discusses the benefits of constructing a Traffic Management Centre (TMC) and the process that was followed in establishing the centre for the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast TMC has been established to manage planned and unplanned events and also the daily operations of the urban road system. It is estimated that annual community savings of $3.4 M are being achieved with its establishment. This conservatively equates to a benefit cost ratio in excess of 4.5. There are also other less tangible benefits with the establishment of the TMC. These include improvements of the relationships between the various road managers and increasing co-operation with various emergency authorities. The co-operation between Main Roads, Gold Coast Council, Police, Ambulance and Fire Service has been enhanced with the availability of the services provided by the TMC. The TMC was officially opened in May 2001 and is already achieving significant community savings. It is expected the investment in the TMC will be recouped within 18 months of operation.
