This paper describes a field trial evaluation of a local bus service experiment undertaken in Birmingham, UK, between September 1990 and September 1991. It outlines the development of the service including the initial research undertaken, its establishment, the development stages it went through, how development requirements were identified and the conclusions that can be drawn from it. The experiment described is innovative in that it is intended to evolve into a scheduled service which will deviate from its route, to pick up or drop off passengers, between timetabled stopping points. What is particularly unusual is that it is an attempt at providing this kind of service on a regular basis within a relatively small local area.
