Development of an International Standards Organisation ISO Standard for motorcycle research impact test procedures.

As a result of more than 20 years of crashworthiness research for motorcycles, the need for an internationally recognized research methodology for motorcycle secondary safety research, has been judged essential by the United Nations/Economic Commission for Europe/Inland Transport Committee/Working Party 29. Consequently, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) was asked to set up a working group to develop such a standard which would include the following items: (1) terminology and definitions; (2) definition of impact conditions in relation to accident data; (3) dummy and dummy leg specifications; (4) instrumentation and measurement procedures; (5) injury criteria; (6) test procedures; (7) parameters for criteria; (6) test procedures; (7) parameters for computer simulation; and (8) test reports. A group of experts in the field of motorcycle safety, motorcycle crashworthiness, and dummy research was formed (ISO/TC22/SC22/WG22). The objectives were: (a) to draft a standard on the basis of the best currently available technology in the field of motorcycle crashworthiness research; and (b) to have the draft standard ready in a period of 18 months, by Spring 1994, for presentation to SC22 and then to ECE/WP29. This paper is a progress report of ISO/TC22/SC22/WG22. It highlights the intensive efforts in this activity, by explaining and summarizing the objectives and the contents of the standard, and informing researchers in allied fields of recent developments.
